Brief Description Of The Artificial Organ Market

There are nearly 78 organs in a human body which differ according to their functions, actions, and sizes. A collection of cells is known as organ which group together and perform single functions in our body. Among all the human body organs skin is the largest organ regarding to its size and weight. Brain is the major organ in the body of human beings which is responsible for performing every function of the body. It is near impossible to function perfectly without one of these organs, though some might e more important than others.

What is meant by an artificial organ?

For the replacement of a natural organ an artificial organ is used. An artificial organ is a man-made device which is implanted in the human body in the replacement of a natural human body organ. Most of the parts in a human body can be replaced by artificial organ. The purpose of using artificial organ by replacing natural organ is to provide life support to the patients for preventing imminent death. The demand of artificial organ transplant is increasing owing to the increase in road accidents and rising cases of organ failure. The changing lifestyle and excessive alcohol consumption is also a major factor for which the demand of artificial organ is increasing globally.

The major segments of the artificial organs:

There are various segments of artificial organ transplant such as artificial pancreas, artificial kidney, artificial liver, artificial heart, bionic limbs and many others. Let us take a look into the various types of artificial organs that are used to replace organs.

Prosthesis:

It is an artificial substitute that is used to replace lost arms and legs. The medical specialties that deals with prosthesis is known as prosthetics.
There is one type of below-knee prosthesis which is made from plastic and fits in the below-knee stump with total contact. It is done either with the help of a strap that passes above the kneecap or by rigid metal knee hinges that attaches to a leather thigh corset. Additionally, there is also a foot piece which generally consists of a solid foot and ankle with layers of rubber in the heel to give it a cushion like effect.
The below-elbow prosthesis consists of a single plastic shell and a metal wrist joint to which a terminal device is attached which can either be a hook or a hand. The person has to wear a shoulder harness. It has a steel cable which extends to the terminal device. If the person using it shrugs his or her shoulder the cables tighten, and the terminal device opens and closes.

Artificial heart:

This device maintains the blood circulation and oxygenation in the human body. There are two types of major artificial heart, one is the heart-lung machine and the other is mechanical heart.

  • The heart lung machine
This device consists of a mechanical pump that maintains the blood circulation and oxygenation in the body of a patient. While conducting a heart surgery this device is used for diverting blood from the veins, directing it through tube into an artificial lung known as oxygenator, and returning it to the body. The oxygenator helps to remove the carbon dioxide and adds oxygen to the blood which is then pumped into the arterial system.

  • Mechanical heart
This device consists of a total artificial heart and ventricular assist devices (VADS). These are machines that have the capability to replace or assist the pumping action of the heart for longer periods without causing much damage to the blood components. When the implantation of the total artificial heart is done both the ventricles needs to be removed. However, the ventricular assist devices support either the right or the left ventricles for which the entire heart remains in the body. Mechanical heart is used in cases of cardiac resuscitation after cardiac arrest to recuperate from cardiogenic shock after heart surgery. It is also used in some patients who are waiting for a heart transplant after chronic heart failure.

Pacemaker:

The pacemaker is an electronic cardiac-support device that helps in producing rhythmic electric pulses. These devices take over the regulations of the patient’s heartbeat with certain type of heart disease such as heart block. In this case an artificial pacemaker is implanted temporarily until the patient’s condition is normal. It can also be used permanently to overcome the block. The electric generator is placed underneath the skin in surgically created pocket below the collarbone.

Dialysis:

The dialysis is commonly known as renal dialysis, kidney dialysis, or haemodialysis. It is a process which is used to remove blood from a patient’s kidney if the functions of the kidney are faulty. It purifies the blood and returns it to the patient’s bloodstream. The artificial kidney or hemodialyzer is a device that eliminates certain unwanted substance from the blood or adds components in it if it is necessary. With this process the device can control the balance of the acid-base in the blood, content of water, and dissolved materials.
The life science industry has done an amazing work in the field of artificial organs research which works as a replacement of the traditional organ transplant. Globally the population is suffering from diseases related to heart, kidney, and liver which will create high demand for artificial organ device. Advancement in technology is also allowing to improve the devices and procedures.
